Madura Kulatunga is a famous and talented Sri Lankan information technology engineer who has specialized skills of software developing and web developing. He originally established his reputation as the developer of Madura English-Sinhala Dictionary which has become the most popular electronic dictionary in Sri Lanka. Madura became well respected among Sri Lankans after releasing the usage of the Dictionary free of charge.
Madura Kulatunga was born in Matara on the 23rd of March 1980 to Sinhalese Buddhist parents. And currently resides in Piliyandala. He educated at Royal College, Colombo 7 and successfully completed Master of Science in Information Technology degree at Sikkim Manipal University. He professionally qualified as a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer.
He found difficulties of using English language during his early age. This is a common problem for people who are struggling to learn a second language. To eliminate this common problem they usually refer conventional printed English-Sinhala dictionaries. But Madura Kulatunga understood this was a time consuming and difficult process which needed to find a better solution. To overcome this challenge he determined to create an electronic dictionary which facilitates obtaining meanings of the words instantly.
Finally he developed Madura English-Sinhala Dictionary and it was freely available to the general public from November 23, 2002. Further he launched this dictionary to the internet naming 'Madura Online' and he became the developer of the first online English-Sinhala dictionary in the world. Madura English-Sinhala Dictionary which gained fast growing popularity is an inevitable tool for students and professionals in their academic and day to day work. The solution which Madura sought for his difficulties with English language has now become a useful solution for millions of Sri Lankan people who has the same difficulty.
The creation which has international standards done by Madura Kulatunga during the time Sri Lanka had very low standards of information technology facilities will become a historic milestone. Many companies who aware of the marketing value of the Madura English-Sinhala Dictionary offered high prices to buy the ownership of the entire product. Madura rejected those offers while retaining the ownership with him and providing the services free of charge continuously. During an era where every thing is sold for money Madura's generosity is honored by Sri Lankans.
Professor Gihan Dias from University of Moratuwa appraised the creative contribution of the development for the information technology field in Sri Lanka by Madura Kulatunga. Professor Gihan Dias invited Madura to represent 'Symposium on Localised Systems and Applications' which Professor J. B. Disanayaka and several other scholars from universities were participated. Addressing the gathering Madura explained special features, technology and further improvements related to his dictionary at the symposium. The presentation that Madura had held was admired by the participants. The symposium was held at the premises of University of Moratuwa on the 2nd September 2009.
Due to the lack of internet usage in Sri Lanka Madura English-Sinhala Dictionary was distributed in compact disks initially. As soon as Sri Lanka was equipped with broadband internet facilities millions have been downloaded the dictionary. Without downloading, over 50,000 daily users access 'Madura Online' dictionary via internet. 'Madura Online' android application developed for mobile phones is also very popular by now.
Madura English-Sinhala Dictionary contains over 230,000 definitions and glossaries of technical terms covering various disciplines including medicine, science, law, engineering, accounts, arts etc. This facilitates use as thesaurus.
